A press release states Nelson was shot after firing a handgun at deputies who were pursuing him on foot and the “three HCSO deputies involved in the incident have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation,” which is standard protocol.
According to the sheriff’s office, the incident began around 8 p.m. as deputies were attempting to locate Nelson, who was wanted on multiple charges, on the 1300 block of Glendale Avenue.
“These included active arrest warrants for felon in possession of a firearm, probation violation and an out-of-county warrant,” the release states. “Additionally, Mr. Nelson was reportedly involved in a prior incident involving the brandishing of a firearm.”
After a foot pursuit ensued, according to the sheriff’s office, “Nelson discharged a .45 caliber handgun at pursuing deputies.”
The release states a firearm was recovered at the scene.
“This remains an active investigation, and further details will be released as appropriate,” the release states. “The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office encourages anyone with information regarding this incident to contact the HCSO at (707) 445-7251.”
